STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island artist and activist Scott LoBaido is still in the hospital following a medical emergency Tuesday night.
LoBaido was taken to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze after experiencing cardiac arrest during the NYPD’s National Night Out Against Crime event in Midland Beach.
According to a bystander who witnessed the incident and requested anonymity, LoBaido, 61, attended the event intending to confront Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was also in attendance.
On Thursday, a hospital spokesperson confirmed LoBaido was still in critical but stable condition, the same condition since roughly 9 p.m. Tuesday.
While his condition remains unchanged, LoBaido began posting on his social media accounts Thursday morning.
On his Instagram story, the Dongan Hills resident posted an image of Frankenstein’s monster with the caption “I am alive.”
Interaction between LoBaido, Mamdani
Earlier Thursday, LoBaido reposted a video from a separate Instagram account showing the activist attempting to approach security barriers near Mamdani as the mayor takes the stage at the NYPD’s National Night Out event on Staten Island.
In the video, at least four police officers can be seen stopping LoBaido a few feet from the barriers as he screams and gestures toward the mayor.
As Mamdani greets the crowd at the event, he is heard in the video saying: “Good evening everyone! It is a pleasure to be here. I want to say thank you to the borough of Staten Island, and thank you to my brother Scott LoBaido. A great artist, though we disagree on the politics.”
The mayor appeared at the gathering to present proclamations to the 120th, 121st, 122nd and 123rd Precincts on Staten Island. Mamdani’s administration touted historically low crime numbers during the first half of 2026.
Hours prior to the event, LoBaido posted a video on Facebook in which he took issue, in part, with Mamdani’s decision to discontinue a plan to hire 5,000 new NYPD officers.
He said violent crime was an issue — despite data presented by the city showing a reduction across the five boroughs — and the mayor’s decision to not bolster the department was a betrayal of police officers.
He said Mamdani planned to show up at the event after “humiliating” police officers and putting their “lives in danger.”
A short time after the attempted confrontation, according to a witness, LoBaido said he was not feeling well.
“He said, ‘I’m not feeling well. I need to sit down,’” the witness recalled. “He went down on one knee and then just went straight back onto his back.”
City Hall did not respond to a request for comment about the situation.
Previous incident with New York City mayor
This was not the first time that LoBaido attempted to confront Mamdani.
In August 2025, LoBaido was arrested after he and a group of protestors hurling xenophobic remarks swarmed then-candidate Zohran Mamdani during a campaign stop on Staten Island.
During the event, protestors rallied around the windows of the venue, attempting to disrupt the speakers by shouting, ringing cowbells and blaring megaphones and sirens.
The protest was organized by LoBaido, who told the Advance/SILive.com at the time that he was arrested and issued three summonses for disorderly conduct, sound violation and foul language.
